Also, the Windows update database gets corrupted which results in Windows updates being stuck or failing to install, etc. If you are also struggling with this problem, Windows update fails to install here are some effective solutions you must try.

Here is the solution that worked for Me!

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator. (Select Yes, when prompted by the User Account Control.)
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter: SC config trustedinstaller start=auto
  4. Restart the PC.

SC config trustedinstaller start

In some cases, a second restart may be required. If you look under Settings > Update & security and you see the message Status:  Awaiting restart, restart the PC a second time to complete the installation.

Perform a clean boot

Temporarily Disable security software (antivirus) if installed, and disconnect the VPN connection. Then check for updates, install the available updates and then turn on your antivirus protection.

Clean booting your computer may also help to fix the problem If any third-party software causes conflict to download & install Windows updates.

  1. Go to the search box > type msconfig
  2. Select System Configuration > Go to the Services tab.
  3. Select Hide all Microsoft services > Disable all.

Run the Windows update troubleshooter that checks and fixes the problem that prevents Windows updates to download and install.

  • Open Settings using the keyboard shortcut Windows + I,

  • Restart windows after completing the troubleshooting process
  • Now check for updates from settings, updates & security.

Reset Windows update components

If none above solutions fix the problem for you, still windows update fails to install or stuck checking updates for hours, it might be that something went wrong with the update files themselves. Clearing the folder where all of the update files are stored will force Windows Update to download fresh files. Here is how to clear the update database cache, and reset Windows update components to the default setup.

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and ok to open Windows services.
  • Scroll down and look for the Windows update service, Right-click on it and select stop.
  • Also, do the same with BITs (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) and Superfetch (superfetch now called sysmain) right-click and select stop.
  • Now Go to the following location .C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.
  • Delete everything inside the download folder, but do not delete the folder itself.
  • To do so, press CTRL + A to select everything and then press Delete to remove the files.
  • Again open Windows services and restart the services (windows update, BITS) which you previously stopped.
  • Restart Windows, and check for updates from settings, updates & security.

Sometimes windows update problems could be caused due to corrupt system files. In this case, Microsoft suggests you run the DISM (Deployment Image & Servicing Management) tool that helps you fix some Windows corruption errors. 1. First of all, thank you for your extended article to fix the latest Win10 update.
Unfortunately after carefully follow every step, I still have te same issue (Couldn’t install update > 0x800f0922)

As I allready read I’m one of the few unlucky ones, that’s why MS doesn’t do anything about it (for the time being, I hope ;-), and despite of all Your work, I’m kinda lost. Windows and all other software runs fine. The best thing to do now is wait?

    1. Hi,
Sometimes Error code 0x800f0922 refere to .net framework.

Make sure you have the latest version of NET Framework installed. You may enable it in Windows features. Here’s how:

Type Windows Features on the search bar and press Enter.
Select Turn Windows Features on or off.
Check any boxes related to DotNet Framework and save selection.
      Restart your PC.

      Turn off your Firewall

We know that this is strange doing, but even Firewall can prevent updates occasionally. Here’s how you can turn it off:

Type Firewall on the search bar and press Enter.
Open Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
Turn off Firewall for both private and public networks.
      Save your selection.
After saving your selection, you may try updating your device.

  2. This is happening to me too. Endless loop of windows trying to update itself 🙁
I tried installing ALL .net available.
I tried to expand the partition to 1GB (it was 500MB before)
I tried to scan for corrupted files, scanned all my drives
My Internet connection works very well. I don’t have any anti-virus or 3rd party firewall
What the F%^k is wrong with windows?

Update KB4495667 will download and install, but when I click “restart”, It says it cant complete the installation.
    I tried—turn off antivirus—ran troubleshooter—ran dism.exe—ran SFC/scannow—downloaded update directly from update catalog—downloaded latest SSU—reset windows update—ran windows 10 media creation tool. NOTHING WORKS.
With the number of people with this same problem, it seems like Microsoft should have some answers.

  4. These and other steps outlined here and from a few other sources has also not worked for me. The update appears to install, but upon restart, The following message is returned: “We couldn’t complete the updates, Undoing changes”. Windows Update history indicates error code 0x800f0922. I’m not sure what else to try. I fear a full reformat and reinstall of Windows may be the only solution, though i’d like to avoid that if possible since my system works fine otherwise.

Yep, Same here, windows fixes all failed for me I am afraid, even installing manually failed.
Not sure what to do now, as I don’t want to reinstall windows, which I might have to do later if I cant find a fix.
